Brooklyn-Curtis Bay is a neighborhood that’s in
need of some serious improvement. Residents stand a 1 in 9 chance of becoming a
victim of a crime, a figure that’s getting worse with each passing year. The
unemployment rate is 208% higher than the US national average, while the median
household income stands at $30,643.
FoodTank is planning a Four-Day Feeding Program
in Curtis Bay Middle School Baltimore. This school is located in West Bat
Avenue, MD.
Background Information
Students at this school are making less
academic progress from one grade to the next compared to students at other
schools in the state. Low progress with low test scores means students are
starting at a low point and are falling even farther behind their peers at other schools in the state.
Test scores at this school fall far below the
state average (7% for English and 5% for Maths as compared against the state
average of 43% for English and 33% for maths). This suggests that students at
this school are likely not performing at grade level.
African Americans in this school comprise 45%
of the total population; Caucasian children constitute 31% of the total student
population while other races make up the rest.
On average, 51% of all students are absent for
more than 15 days or more during a school year. This is more than twice the
state’s average.
As the poverty level in this area is high, so
is hunger. A parent once commented that “Obviously teachers at this school
appear to be more concerned about discipline than teaching”.
FoodTank has learned that students in this
school come to school hungry or go back without hope of finding one.
Objectives
The primary purpose of implementing this
program is to stage 4 days feeding program in this school and use the same to educate
students about the need to eat healthily.
Specifically, the program aims to: To launch a
4-day feeding program for students at the school and use the same medium to
Increase parent/guardian participation in school activities as this may
increase student enrolment and retention.
Funding
As a non-profit organization looking to give
back to Brooklyn-Curtis Bay, FoodTank hopes to reach beyond Baltimore and
rather focus on a global audience for funding this event.
As social media platforms and other online
tools forge ahead as charitable information hubs, FoodTank will be exploring
this avenue using two approaches.
1. Hosting a Donor Contest
Online contests are a great way to spark
interest in your social media followers. Invite individuals and other
businesses to join in on the fun by hosting a “biggest donor contest”.
Encourage all participants to post pictures, videos, and posts of their donations.
This engagement works well for you and other businesses as they can show their
charitable side and help you achieve your goal.
2. Creating Facebook Event
FoodTank will create a Food Event and use the
hashtag #fooddrive and #donate to reach more audiences. We will then launch a
series of awareness campaigns using Facebook and Instagram advertising engines.
With this, we hope to reach over 10 million persons. Our target is a donation
conversion rate of 0.1% of the total population reached.
In these events and social advertising campaigns, we will include all important details about Brooklyn-Curtis Bay and Curtis Bay Middle School.
